7th Grade Immunizations
Attention parents of current 6th graders: Texas State requires that students entering 7th grade have updated immunization records which include the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines. Please have your student’s vaccine records updated with the campus nurse or take the student for immunizations prior to beginning the 2023-2024 school year.

Screenings
Hearing, Vision & Spinal Screenings will be done during this year for all students new to the district. Vision, Hearing, and the Texas Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes Screenings are done for all 7th graders, while Spinal Screenings are done for all 6th graders. A physician’s record of these screenings must be on file with the school nurse if you do not want these screenings performed at school.

Emergency Contacts
Please remember to keep all phone numbers and addresses up-to-date with the front office staff, registrar, and the nurse’s office in case of emergencies.

Nutrition
Parents, please help your student to eat a healthy breakfast before coming to school or encourage them to eat free breakfast in the cafeteria before school. Breakfast is free everyday for all students at Hernandez Middle School. Eating breakfast is one of the most important things to do to prepare for the school day. Some examples of quick and easy breakfast menus are: bagels, peanut butter, muffins, juices, yogurts, fruit, and granola bars. Proper nutrition, regular exercise and good hygiene habits help us all feel better, and help to reduce the frequency of illness.

Hygiene
Hand washing is one of the single most important ways to decrease the spread of infectious illnesses. Hands should be washed after using the restroom, after sneezing and coughing, and before preparing food. Hot soapy water should be used. Personal hygiene is important during the adolescent years as bodies are growing and changing.

Sleep/Exercise
Regular and adequate sleep are important in staying healthy and ready to learn. It is recommended that your student gets 10 hours of sleep each night in order to do their best in school. Regular exercise is a necessary daily requirement. We must get moving in order to live healthy productive lives. Make exercise a fun family time.
